THE

JOURNEY

6. Once this renovation is complete we will begin our journey across the world. Starting from Venice, one of the cities central to climate talk in Europe, we aim to stop at places along the way

that are most at risk from sea-level rising.

Scientific estimates on what sort of sea level rise we can expect before the turn of the next century vary between 1m and 7m. Put into perspective though, a rise of just 1m would affect some 147-216 million people.

A rise of 3m would see London, Miami, Amsterdam, New York, Boston, Mumbai, Osaka, Venice, Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok all underwater.

It’s long past time we do something about this, we at Gaiarta believe

that the only way change can be achieved

is to truly raise consciousness and reconnect with nature.

GOALS OF

THE JOURNEY

7. On the course of our journey we will be undergoing three primary goals each in line with the three sides of our project launch: the energy challenge, social/scientific collaboration, and the Children of the Tide project.

For the first of these goals we really want to set the example for sustainable living, we want these principles to be clear at every stage and in every aspect

of the project.

‘The Chandeleur’, reborn with biomimicry inspired technologies and using the latest in renewable energy solutions will be a literal flag-ship for sustainable living.

7.A.

ENERGY

CHALLENGE

7.A. In line with the first of these aims we intend to undergo an energy challenge with the goal of sailing from Venice across the world to Sydney, a journey of roughly 9 months where we intend to use zero fossil fuels.

We will use this journey to showcase new renewable technologies, developing and prototyping both existing and new biomimicry solutions, to show the progress we can make when we work more closely with nature.

To achieve this we are rebuilding the classic sailing boat Chandeleur, with the latest innovations in sustainable living and biomimicry.

There is a recent history of minimalistic racing boats running sustainably, but we want to show

that living vessels too don’t need to rely on fuel.

We plan to not only power the boat, but scientific equipment and modern conveniences too with zero fossil fuels.

Ours is the mindful rebuilding of a boat, one where we do not have to choose between either sustainability or beauty and comfort.

It’s a big project but it’s very important to us to show how anything can be made to run sustainably.

7.B.

SOCIAL /SCIENTIFIC

COLLABORATION

7.B. The second goal of this journey is to focus on social/scientific collaboration.

Many of the cultures we will be visiting have been living hand in hand with nature for centuries and we feel this would be an amazing opportunity to learn from each other.

Working with local NGOs, we will also learn about the challenges facing these communities in the coming years and will propose further developmental challenges

and competitions with universities around the world to problem solve these issues.

7.C.

CHILDREN

OF THE TIDE

7.C. The third part of the trip will be collaborative art projects.

Central to this is our Children of

the Tide project, announced last year.

We will ask children at all the places we stop at on our journey to write ‘their message to the world on our sail’ one close to their hearts.

We will unveil this sail in full view at Sydney harbour, on the completion of our energy challenge, and it will serve as a powerful prelude for further conversations on climate change and conscientious living.

These will take place at a conference, which we will organize, featuring scientists working on sea-level rise and diplomats from many of the communities and countries at risk from the sea level rise.

Through art we want to create a space, and a platform, for the voices of the world to be heard.
